'Another Time in Fragments'

Interior designer Harry Gregory’s main inspiration behind this project was purely its geographical location. The Hague is a city on the North Sea coast of the Western Netherlands and is cosmopolitan and cultured, The Hague is Holland’s third-largest town after Amsterdam and Rotterdam. The close proximity to the North Sea provided the colour palette of greys and blues and also provided the inspiration for the guest room and Public Area design.

 

Invited to make a triptych of paintings for Gregory’s adventurous open plan hall, lobby and bar area Alan Rankle also thought immediately of the cultural significance of this northern country as the home to some of the greatest landscape and urban painting from the 17th century onwards. Artists such as Jacob van Ruisdael, Pieter de Hooch and Miendart Hobbema have been a major influence on Rankle’s development as a painter and he decided to create a work, which would both reflect on and expand this historical tradition.

 

‘Another Time in Fragments’ - a title inspired by the arguably northern poetics of the American Beat Poet Gary Snyder - plays a key role in the development of Alan Rankle’s interest in making site-specific artworks which are completely relevant to their location and architectural setting.
